A practical masterclass on working with light in cinema.

Light is one of the main tools of cinematic language. It creates volume, atmosphere, directs the viewer’s attention, and helps tell the story. But behind every beautiful shot lies a fairly clear logic: how to position a light source, how to control its direction, and how to work with space.

In this masterclass, we will explore the basic principles of working with light and immediately put them into practice — both in a studio and outdoors.

The masterclass will be led by:

Mikhail Nekrasov — has worked in film for over 10 years as a gaffer and cinematographer. Director of photography for all films of the Kinolaboratory.

Valentina Gabysheva — over 10 years in film as a lighting technician and gaffer. Has worked on feature films, short films, commercials, and music videos.

The format of the class is highly practical. We will not only discuss lighting solutions but also work extensively with the equipment itself: understanding how it works, how to properly set it up, and how to use it safely on set.

Masterclass Plan

Studio (3 hours)

— brief introduction and discussion of the logic of light in cinema

— introduction to lighting equipment and basic principles of how it works

We will go in detail through working with equipment on set:

— how to set up stands and tripods

— how to properly install and secure lighting fixtures

— how to set up lighting safely for both crew and equipment

— how to control the direction and quality of light

We will gradually build lighting setups:

— one light source and one person in the frame

— working with attachments and light modifiers

— positioning the light source in relation to the actor

— working with surfaces: diffusion, reflection, and shadow

— using mirrors

Then we will add a second person into the frame and observe how the lighting setup and distribution of light between characters changes.

Outdoor (3 hours)

We will transfer the same principles into a natural environment:

— working with reflection and shadow

— controlling sunlight

— using frames, flags, and reflective surfaces

— building a lighting setup in outdoor conditions

The main goal is to understand the logic: how to control light in different conditions and how to work with equipment on a real film set.

This masterclass is suitable for those who want not only to understand lighting theory but also to learn how to work hands-on with equipment: setting up lights, controlling them, and seeing how each decision affects the image.
